Tyler made me watch the Mythbusters episode where they proved he could but it wouldn't have been narratively satisfying if against all odds they both live. It wouldn't have been a tragedy! The whole point of the movie is that Jack Dawson sees that Rose needs to be saved so killing her would have been super unsatisfying like the end of Romeo and Juliet and Jack's sacrifice gave her the freedom she desperately wanted and he already had.
